EDUC 5413 Week 4

Part 1

  1. The Magic School lesson plan for Oklahoma Science Standard 3.ESS2.1 gives the teacher an excellent starting point for introducing weather data. It allows them to rely on and expand their knowledge of tables and bar graphs. The assessment is based on the most basic understanding of the standard.
  2. Unfortunately, this lesson plan does not give specific instructions on how the students are to “create a seasonal weather chart that includes temperature, precipitation, and wind conditions” or what tools they will use to “create a seasonal weather chart.” I would include links to a website or text that contains the raw data for them to include in their bar graph, as well as a technology tool students can use to create the bar graph.
  3. MagicSchool is an excellent tool for educators to use as a starting point for any lesson. However, it does not give enough information to fully implement its concepts if the educator only uses the lesson plan generator. Other MagicSchool tools should be used to expand and add to its basic lesson layout.

  5. Reading Reflections:

    • Make, learn, succeed: Building a culture of creativity in your school: There are many sites and tools listed that could supplement and enhance this lesson.
    • Open Educational Resources (OER): Magic School is a free educational resource available to all educators.
    • 5E Method of Lesson Planning: Unfortunately, this lesson stops short of implementing the 5E Instructional Model.  There is some “engaging and explaining”, but little “exploring or elaborating”.  The “evaluating” portion could be attained by expanding the extension activity further.

Part 2

  1. Attempt One—Informational Text Generator— I did not find this effective. It did not generate a text that my students could use to obtain the particular data needed to complete the assignment. However, it could be helpful in an ELA or Social Studies lesson.   https://app.magicschool.ai/tools/informational-text-generator?share=6be11e5e-c24d-4f15-a0d1-076876aa82b6

  2. Attempt Two—Worksheet Generator—I created an effective worksheet to add to this lesson. However, you must upgrade to a paid version of Magic School in order to print the created worksheet. I tried the print function as described by Raina (chatbot), but it only printed exactly on the screen. This format was not appropriate for students. After exploring it further, MagicSchool allows you to copy/paste the text it generates into a Google Doc or Word document.

  3. Attempt Three - YouTube Video Questions - It was super easy for MagicSchool to generate 5 questions over the specific video I planned to show with this lesson. Still, again, you must upgrade to the paid version to download the questions into a usable document for assessment. They would help lead a discussion after the video. Edit: See attempt two for a workaround. https://app.magicschool.ai/tools/youtube?share=87f01a73-ec92-4fb8-8702-4bfa21995108

  4. Attempt Four - MagicSchool for Student Ideas - This was a very effective tool to expand and incorporate more activities into the lesson. This would be an excellent resource for teachers.

Part 3

MagicSchool is one of the latest AI innovations that teachers and students can use to save time creating lessons and brainstorm ways to engage, expand, and enrich those lessons. As with any new service or concept, diving deep into the technology tool takes time to discover and hone in on its aspects that truly apply to the grade and subject you teach. Allocating the time in the beginning is challenging, but the time-saving portions of MagicSchool are worth the dedication. MagicSchool is my first attempt using an AI platform as a teaching tool. I will definitely utilize more in the future.

Comments

  1. I like how you tried different approaches to different lessons. I also tried doing this and got many different choices from the same generated lesson.

  2. Hello! I agree there are a lot of benefits, but also some challenges with using this tool. The free version has a lot of options, but limits what can really be done. I tried numerous ways to get different plans as well and finally found one that could work, but it was time-consuming. I think with more training and time, the tool could be helpful. Great blog!

  3. I agree that while this tool offers many advantages, it also comes with some challenges. The free version does provide several useful features, but it also has limitations that can make it difficult to fully use the tool’s potential. I also spent a lot of time exploring different plan options, trying to find one that would meet my needs without going over budget. Eventually, I found something that worked, but the process was definitely time-consuming and a bit frustrating. I think with more training and a better understanding of how to navigate the tool and its features, it could become a really effective resource. With a little more support and time to practice, this tool has the potential to make a positive difference in the classroom.
